SPC flooring installation methods
SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) flooring can be installed using the following common methods:
Click - Lock Installation (Floating Floor Method)
This is one of the most popular installation methods for SPC flooring due to its simplicity and convenience.
Prepare the Subfloor
Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Any dirt, debris, or moisture can affect the installation and the performance of the SPC flooring. Use a spirit level to check for unevenness. If there are minor dips or bumps, you can use a self - leveling compound to smooth the surface. For larger irregularities, you may need to sand or patch the subfloor.
Lay a Vapor Barrier (Optional)
In areas where moisture might be a concern, such as basements or crawl spaces, laying a vapor barrier is recommended. This helps prevent moisture from seeping up through the subfloor and damaging the SPC flooring. The vapor barrier should be laid flat and cover the entire area to be installed.
Start the Installation
Begin in a corner of the room. Place the first plank against the wall, leaving a small expansion gap (usually around 1/4 - 3/8 inch) to allow for natural expansion and contraction of the flooring. Align the tongue of the plank with the groove of the adjacent plank and gently tap or press them together until they lock securely. You can use a rubber mallet for a more secure connection if needed.
Continue Placing Planks
Work your way across the room, row by row. When you reach the end of a row, measure and cut the last plank to fit the remaining space using a utility knife or a saw. Make sure to cut the plank so that the locking mechanism is still intact.
Installing Along Walls and Obstacles
When installing near walls, pipes, or other obstacles, you may need to make angled cuts or cutouts. Use a jigsaw or a coping saw for more complex shapes. Always leave the necessary expansion gap around the perimeter of the room.
Finishing Touches
Once the entire floor is installed, you can install baseboards or quarter - round molding to cover the expansion gap and give the floor a finished look.
Glue - Down Installation
This method provides a more permanent and secure installation, especially suitable for commercial spaces or areas with heavy traffic.
Subfloor Preparation
Similar to the click - lock method, the subfloor must be clean, dry, and level. Any loose particles or dust should be removed to ensure good adhesion of the glue.
Apply the Adhesive
Use a notched trowel to spread the appropriate adhesive evenly over the subfloor. The type of adhesive used should be compatible with SPC flooring. Apply the glue in small sections at a time to prevent it from drying before the planks are installed.
Install the Planks
Carefully place the SPC planks onto the glued subfloor, starting from a corner. Press the planks firmly into the adhesive, working from the center of the plank outwards to ensure full contact and adhesion. Use a roller or a mallet to further secure the planks and eliminate any air bubbles.
Seam Alignment and Finishing
Make sure the seams between the planks are aligned properly. After installing each plank, wipe off any excess glue that may have squeezed out from the edges. Allow the adhesive to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions before walking on the floor or placing furniture.
Direct - Stick Installation (Similar to Glue - Down but for Some Specific Products)
Some SPC flooring products come with a pre - applied adhesive backing.
Subfloor Preparation
As with other methods, prepare the subfloor by ensuring it is clean, dry, and level.
Peel and Stick
Regardless of the installation method chosen, it's crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully for the best results.
